Hurricane Irma | A Saint Christopher Travel Guide

Hurricane Irma affected Georgia the same dates my mother was due to have another round of chemo. The Atlanta and surrounded cities hasn’t seen this much preparation since the 1993 hurricane Emily. So shutting down the Cancer Treatment Center was a huge shocker. We could see the top of the center in the horizon and then the phone rings, “Ms Hennigan, we are going to have to reschedule your appointment” but thankfully we were still able to stay in our room. Because turning around was not an option.

The next morning we woke up to an eerie calm across the sky and the only thing on TV was tracking another path of another hurricane. The light rain started to drizzle, and then the wind started to pick up and watching all three of us stare out the window I could feel something different in the air. Just at the point where you thought it might be much less worse than they predicted, it hit, and it felt like mister Halloween was at our window! The very first whip of wind was so strong that it blew the power out, street signs were whipping like a kid’s sparkly windmill and then you could hear the sound of trees snap all around us. It was awesome! Said the girl who loves the rain.

However, once the generators kicked on, the weather channel was posting live coverage of the metro area. Thousands of people were out power and the interstates covered in pine trees, that had slammed to the ground. You heard of tragic deaths by the cause of the storm and homes ripped apart by the wind. Watching this, I couldn’t  help but feel blessed in the mist of this hurricane.

We have travelled miles away from our home for over two years now. Every morning at the wee hours, my dad starts our trip with the Saint Christopher “Be Our Guide” prayer. He ends it with an, “Our Father” and “Hail Mary’. I would like to think that this has been our guide in dodging these obstacles.

Below is the Saint Christopher prayer and my top favorite travel items from:

Prayer to Saint Christopher
St. Christopher’s Protection
Dear Saint Christopher,
protect me today
in all my travels
along the road’s way.
Give your warning sign
if danger is near
so that I may stop
while the path is clear.
Be at my window
and direct me through
when the vision blurs
From out of the blue.
Carry me safely
to my destined place,
like you carried Christ
in your close embrace.
Amen.

Hey Peeps! I'm Kacie, a 30 something year old dreamer with a love of all things. I'm a shy and very quiet girl from Louisiana. I grew up on a farm in the middle of watermelon fields and dirt roads. However, it was in the middle of those roads where my journey began as a child. I would like to think that I can always return to where I’m from when life is overwhelming. I enjoy baking, gardening, eating, photography, & all things country-related. I’m also a cradle Catholic who enjoys learning more about Catholicism. God has put my Faith to the test on several different occasions throughout my life. I’m a caregiver to my mother and this is where starting a blog began.
